Robert Johnson worked for the Florida Department of Corrections for a number of years. He was a correctional officer at Florida correctional institutions.
Johnson came to work, on what seemed like an ordinary day. While at work, he discovered a box of contraband that an inmate, or inmates, were attempting to have brought into the facility. The value of the contraband contained in the box was thought to be about $50,000. Johnson prevented this contraband from getting into the hands of the inmate population.
Johnson was not aware of the fact that the inmate who was attempting to get the contraband into the facility had a mobile phone in his position. Illegal mobile phones are significant problems in correctional facilities across the United States.
Using the illegal mobile phone, the inmate set about to exact revenge and retribution on correctional officer Johnson. The inmate reached out to a fellow gang member outside the correctional facility.
The inmate made arrangements with his fellow gang member to have correctional officer Johnson killed. The scheme to kill Johnson was sent into action.
Not long after the inmate made the illegal phone call to set up the killing of Johnson, the inmates compatriot arrived at the correctional officer’s home early one morning. The inmate’s colleague broke down the front door and stormed into Johnson’s home.
The attacker opened fire on Johnson, shooting him multiple times. The prognosis for Johnson after the attack was not good. He was not expected to survive. In the end, Johnson managed to survive the attack on his life.
Following this horrific incident, Johnson started a crusade to keep illegal mobile phones out of correctional facilities. He strives mightily to let the world know how serious of a problem illegal phones in correctional institutions is as this juncture in time.
